Roundup: P-T volleyball drops first section contest

The Penn-Trafford boys volleyball team has opened the season strong and would be on an undefeated roll if not for the Plum Mustangs.

The Warriors dropped their only section loss last week to Plum and then fell to the Mustangs Saturday at the Derry Area Tournament.

Penn-Trafford (4-1, 2-1) fell to Plum 3-1 April 1 with games of 25-21, 8-25, 19-25 and 21-25. The Warriors rebounded to edge Derry Area last Thursday, 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11).

During pool play of the Derry Area Tournament Saturday, P-T lost two games to Plum, won two against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Altoona and split with Derry Area and Baldwin.

The record advanced the Warriors into the playoffs where they were edged by Plum, 25-23.

"We saw some good competition and played very well overall. Our ball control improved from earlier in the week," coach Jim Schall said.

"Justin Savulak and Brad Yagla both had good days on Saturday. Brad has been pretty good all year, but that's the best Justin has done. We've got a good team and I think we'll continue to get better."

P-T was scheduled to play Woodland Hills last night, Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

Softball

The Penn-Trafford softball team remained winless in Section 1-AAAA on Monday after a narrow 4-3 loss to neighborhood rival Norwin.

The victory improved Norwin to 1-3 both overall and in Section 1-AAAA early on in the season. Penn-Trafford fell to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in section play.

P-T got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Norwin put up four runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win.

Norwin senior Jessica Guzewicz led off with a triple, and after a bunt and a walk, the Lady Knights had a run-scoring grounder.

Another ground out followed, and then, senior Lisa Gulasy came through with a two-run single with two outs to put Norwin ahead for good.

Penn-Trafford managed two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be all the scoring as Norwin freshman Katie Miller relieved junior Courtney Morton to get the final five outs, to get the save and cement the victory.

Senior Kelly Lemmon took the loss for Penn-Trafford. Junior Michelle Birkos led the offense with two doubles.

The Lady Warriors also suffered defeats to Albert Gallatin, 5-2, and Connellsville, 5-0, last week.

Penn-Trafford was scheduled to host Hempfield Area yesterday, Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time.
