Traffic concerns enter debate on location of new skate park
Trafford Recreation Board members are leaning toward the B-Y Park for a future skate park. But some members are worried about traffic.
At Monday night's rec board meeting, Frank Bruno, councilman and rec board member, presented a list of pros and cons for each park or playground in the borough.
Bruno said the B-Y would be a good location because the land already is level, it isn't too close to any residential area, and there's room to expand the park if needed. If the park fails, Bruno said, the land could be used as a parking lot.
"The B-Y out of all of the locations is the most dangerous to access," Bruno said. "Nonetheless, they'll get there, but it's the most dangerous to get to by foot.
"I'm not saying I'm not for the area, I'm just pointing out that are you going to have kids skating down Route 130 around that bend."
Rec board member Tammi DeMarchi agreed.
"I think it's a wonderful location, but I'm afraid a kid will get hurt getting there," DeMarchi said.
Dennis Beene, councilman and rec board member, wasn't convinced.
"These kids already know the paths. They walk down there to fish and they take the shortcuts," he said.
He said vandalism probably wouldn't be a problem either.
"They won't mess up their own play spot," Beene said. "They'll mess up somebody else's, but not their own."
Rec board member Nick Petrucci suggested putting the skate park near the gas well.
"The space over by the well is just sitting there," Petrucci said. "It's easy to get to, you can get a street light by (Route 130) and it's great. It's convenient."
Petrucci said that location would deter any vandalism.
"The police are driving right by, people driving by," he said. "Everybody would have to have a lookout to do any type of vandalism."
Council will continue to review the issue.
"Wherever you put it, I think you really need to look at it," resident Ray Peduzzi said.
"I think it's going to be a major issue where you put this thing."
